Volunteers play an important role in the community.
Volunteers are a vital part of our organization, helping us provide services to children, youth and families every year—and contributing to a sense of community partnership and collaboration. In 2011–2012, 62 volunteers provided more than 6,344 hours of service and drove more than 325,572 kilometres.
Volunteers provide a wide range of services.
Men and women of all ages, singles and couples, people who are working, retired or at school all volunteer with FCSLLG. Some mentor children, help with homework, provide transportation, or help with special projects such as the Christmas Angel Tree or Snowsuit campaigns. Volunteers may also assist with fundraising. We try to fit the assignment to meet the skills, interests and available time of each volunteer.
Our need for volunteers depends on the needs of the community.
Key roles for which we often need volunteers include:
- Tutors—who help support children struggling with academic demands. Sessions may cover basic reading, comprehension, math skills, sciences, grammar and verbal skills, writing or computer use.
- Drivers—who perform the invaluable service of helping staff and foster families meet children’s transportation needs. Compensation is provided on a per-kilometre basis.
Other areas in which we commonly need volunteer help include:
- Providing one-on-one attention and positive role modelling to kids
- Helping maintain our family visiting rooms and toys
We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of one year.
This ensures a certain degree of consistency for our children – of course we hope that you will choose to stay longer.
How can I become a volunteer?
Call our Volunteer Services staff at 1-855-667-2726. You will be asked to come to an interview, provide three references, complete a criminal record check, consent to an agency record check, and attend an orientation session. This process will help both you and us decide if volunteering at FCSLLG is the right thing for you. Once you’re approved as a volunteer we will match you to an assignment that most closely relates to your interests and skills.
